IRS e-file system shutdown

On account of facilitating system and programming changes, the IRS has closed its e-file system operations from August 31, 2018 through September 4, 2018 for electronically filing form 2290, Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return. An owner of a highway motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more is required to file a return for each taxable period and pay the applicable taxes. Usually, Form 2290 should be filed by August 31st, 2018, for all vehicles that are first used in the month of July during this tax period (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019).

Extension of time for filing Form 2290   paying the tax

Taxpayers who missed to file form 2290 electronically by August 31st, 2018, are considered ‘affected taxpayers’ and are granted an extension to file form 2290 by September 7, 2018 without any penalty. However, this shutdown has no effect on the ability to paper file form 2290 and the deadline for the same remains August 31, 2018. Since HVUT is due for electronic filers until the time form 2290 can be electronically filed, IRS has given an extension in paying the tax due amounts until September 7, 2018 and HVUT payments will be considered as timely paid until the same. However again, those who paper file have their payment deadlines unchanged as August 31, 2018 only.

You can e-file Form 2290 and can receive your stamped copy by Sept. 7, without any late fee.

Penalty for late filing/paying HVUT

Failing to file form 2290 for the liable Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is equivalent to 4.5% of the total tax due assessed on a monthly basis up to five months. Additional monthly penalty equal to 0.5 percent of total tax due is applicable to late filers who pay late. Additional interest charges of 0.54 % per month builds up as well. An affected taxpayer e-filing after the 5th of September, 2018 can inquire with the IRS on penalty using the contact details provided on the notice that they may get for filing after the extension period.
