Heavy vehicle Use Tax liability

If you own a heavy vehicle weighing 55, 000 pounds or more in your name during any tax period and have first used it on public highway in the month of July of the present year, you have to file form 2290 & pay the tax due amounts to the IRS before the end of August of that year.

Report Suspended vehicles exceeding limits

On form 2290, you can figure and pay the tax due on a vehicle for which you completed the suspension statement on another Form 2290 if that vehicle later exceeded the mileage use limit during the tax period.

Report Vehicle falling into new weight category

If, during the tax period, the taxable gross weight of your vehicle increases and the vehicle falls into a new category, you need to figure out the new tax amount and pay the dues after filing form 2290.

Claim suspension from tax

On form 2290, you have to report suspension from tax to the IRS if you have a taxable heavy vehicle but you will be using it during the period 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles).
