A Step-by-Step Guide on Filing HVUT Tax Returns Online

HVUT Collection and Administration Print

In this section, we examine the trucker’s HVUT collection and administration process diagrammatically.

The IRS is responsible for tax collection and so all the payments related to the truckers’ HVUT are made to the IRS by truck owners. Tax payment for existing heavy vehicles covers the period from July 1(current year) to June 30(next year). For new vehicles, IRS Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use.

Once the owner is done with filing the tax through paper or electronically (IRS recommended), they would return the e-file watermarked schedule 1 copy (which will be reaching the owner within minutes if he uses our form 2290 e-file software). The proof of payment must then be submitted for their registration renewal to relevant state authorities. This is illustrated below.

In the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), Congress took action to enhance HVUT enforcement through several provisions like Mandating that HVUT taxpayers with 25 or more vehicles file taxes electronically, Repealing the option to pay the HVUT on a quarterly basis etc. The Federal Highway Trust Fund (HTF) finances the federal highway program through fuel and other highway-use taxes. The funds are invested in our nation’s transportation infrastructure. And, we at Tax2290 are proud to be contributing our part to it as a reliable e-file software provider, making the otherwise strenuous tax filing life of our truckers so simple at their convenience.
