IRS Form 2290 is used to report the heavy highway vehicle use tax return to the federal authorities. This IRS Tax Form 2290 is reported once in a year and the tax year starts from 1st of July till 30th of June.

Use of Form 2290

  • Evaluate and pay the highway truck taxes for vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more;
  • Prepare and report suspension (exempt) of tax for heavy trucks expected to hit public roads well within the mileage use limit of 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) during the period.
  • Evaluate and pay the tax on a used truck acquired and used during the period.
  • Evaluate and pay an amended 2290 return on a highway truck for which suspension (exempt from tax) was claimed, later exceeded the mileage use limit during the period.
  • Evaluate and pay an amended 2290 return on a highway heavy truck for which the taxable gross weight increased and falls into a new category during the period.
  • Claim for a heavy vehicle that were destroyed, stolen, sold or used 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agriculture vehicles).
  • Report acquisition of a used taxable vehicle for which the tax has been suspended

Form 2290 and Stamped Schedule -1 proof

Form 2290 and Schedule -1 is reported along with the list of vehicles for which you are paying tax with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and the taxable gross weight category.

Form 2290 Schedule -1 used as a proof of payment to register the vehicles listed with the authorities. This schedule -1 proof of payment is stamped and returned by IRS with the e-file watermark and date it received the return for processing.

Form 2290 Schedule -1 proof is accepted to renew vehicle registration with the state authorities, DMV or DOT authorities, to renew license plates and insurance tags.

Reporting Form 2290

Every heavy truck operator need to report this Form 2290 with the IRS, could be an individual, or a limited liability company (LLC), corporation, partnership, or any other type of organization (including nonprofit, charitable, educational, etc.).

Form 2290 must be filed for the month the taxable vehicle is first used on public highways during the current period in other words file 2290 by the last day of the month following the month of first. If any due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, file by the next business day.

When the vehicle is put to use after July, the taxes will be estimated pro-rated basis and filed accordingly. Seeking extension of time to report 2290 tax, then write to IRS Cincinnati office well before the due date of the return.

To complete Form 2290, your employer identification number (EIN) (cannot use your social security number) vehicle identification number (VIN) of each vehicle and the taxable gross weight category of each vehicle is require.

Paying tax on Form 2290

When you owe taxes to IRS it can be paid in three methods, Electronic funds withdrawal (EFW or direct debit method), Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) and Check or money order using the payment voucher.

Electronic filing or E-filing

Electronic filing is required for each 2290 tax return reporting 25 or more vehicles that you file during the tax period. However, you are encouraged to file electronically regardless of the number of vehicles being reported.
